Challenge
The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) faced increasing public safety demands in downtown Minneapolis while operating with limited personnel. Late-night activity required continuous monitoring across multiple high-traffic areas, yet maintaining a constant physical police presence was neither scalable nor sustainable. MPD needed a way to expand visibility, improve response times, and support proactive policing without adding officers or increasing operational strain.
Solution
MPD incorporated Mobile Pro Systems’ mobile remote surveillance platforms into its Downtown Late Night Safety Plan to extend situational awareness across critical areas. Rapidly deployable mobile surveillance units were positioned where risk and activity were highest, providing real-time visibility without requiring officers to be physically present at each location.
The solution combined high-resolution cameras, remote access, and centralized system management through Mobile Pro Systems’ monitoring dashboard. Officers could monitor activity, assess developing situations, and coordinate responses from a central location, while the mobile nature of the units allowed the department to adapt coverage as conditions changed. The visible presence of the surveillance platforms also served as a deterrent, reinforcing safer behavior in public spaces.
Result
Remote surveillance quickly became an effective force multiplier for MPD. Officers gained earlier awareness of developing incidents, enabling faster and more targeted responses. In one documented case, surveillance footage helped identify and apprehend a shooting suspect within minutes, demonstrating the system’s ability to directly support active investigations.
Beyond individual incidents, MPD improved overall resource allocation by reducing the need for constant on-site monitoring and focusing personnel where human interaction was most critical. Leadership highlighted the value of being able to observe and react before situations escalated—strengthening both public safety outcomes and operational efficiency.
